Travel insurance and the million-dollar baby

The recent media reports caught our eye. If you travel internationally, you may have noticed them too. After giving birth to a baby girl nine weeks prematurely in Hawaii, Jennifer Huculak-Kimmel and her husband Darren Kimmel, of Humboldt Saskatchewan, were denied travel health and medical coverage by their travel insurer, Saskatchewan Blue Cross (“SBC”), and saddled with a $950,000 hospital bill. Their situation highlights the importance of knowing what is covered and what is not when you buy travel insurance.
